When is bone grafting necessary?
Bone grafting may be necessary in case of tooth loss, as the jawbone in the area of the missing tooth begins to atrophy quickly, which may necessitate bone replacement. Such a case may arise if we wish to replace the missing tooth with an implant. There are several types of bone grafting procedures, the necessity of which is influenced by several factors, including the degree of reduction in bone height and width, as well as the extent of bone loss.
How is bone grafting performed?
During bone grafting, the bone is elevated using natural or artificial synthetic materials or even by transplanting one’s own bone from the jawbone. If the bone volume in the upper jaw is not sufficient in width, which may hinder the implantation, a special bone grafting procedure called sinus lift is performed. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia and/or sedation, which allows the procedure to be carried out painlessly.
